I’ve been in search for an alternative spa center to escape, unwind and rejuvenate for months now. Not much had appeal to me until fellow blogger, Ia of IaAdamLim, invited me for an afternoon of complete healing at one of the first eco-friendly day spas in the Philippines.

Nestled deep in the heart of Metro Manila, at the 3rd floor of Manila Ocean Park complex, the Philippines’ first state-of-the-art Oceanarium, open water marine habitat, boutique mall and function facilities at the back of the Quirino Grandstand. Zenyu Eco Spa is right next to Hotel H2O, the Philippines’ first aquarium-themed chic urban getaway.

Dr. Eric Tan, Zenyu Spa Manager explained to us the concept of this latest spa trend. Zenyu is a Japanese term for Complete Healing. He even showed us some experiments displayed on location about the importance of Negative Ions in stabilizing free radicals.

Included in the experiment are the 5 month-old raw meat, egg and cheese stored at a box which emits negative ions. Interesting that it don’t smell rotten or even infested by maggots. The egg looks crystallized.  Nails were immersed on water and placed in an Ionized Bottle against an ordinary bottle. The latter looked brownish, where the stain already mixed up with the content while the stain at the Ionized Bottle were contained at the bottom part only.

The Ecoparadise Store are well equipped with great range of environmentally friendly products for sustainable living. We were then tested with a capillary microscope to check out our visual blood capillaries. For most of us, our blood flow seemed normal, but when a piece of ionized cloth were put above our arms, the blood circulation were even better.

Results from the monitor shows evidence of stress, unbalance diet and other medical conditions.

For my husband who has asthma, he enjoyed this treatment better than sauna and steam bath. Needless to say, we felt rejuvenated after those two treatments.

The women’s changing area and bath is well equipped with lockers. We were given with waterproof bracelet key and towel. We get to try Pirikare Multipurpose Powder made from natural vegetable oil and anti-oxidant solution. It feels gentle on the skin and is also environmental friendly.

Got a new look and I’m lovin’ it.

I was itching to go to the salon earlier this week. It’s been ages since I’ve last visited Freshaire in Festival Mall, Alabang.

For years, I vouch for their best service and cheap rates. Although I have been blessed with fine and straight hair, I pay them a visit occasionally for straightening with cellophane. Cheaper than hair rebonding with the same result.

Now, I don’t have any idea on what to do with my hair since I just had a trim about two months ago. As to what service to avail for my hair, I have yet to decide until I encountered the magic word “digi perm“. Huh?!

Digital perming or digi perm or “hot” perming is a curling technique that originated in Japan.  It uses hot rods connected to a machine to regulate the temperature. Contrary to the traditional perm or cold perming, digi perm uses a different solution plus heat. Big curls, beach waves, luscious locks are best achieved with this kind of technique.

It started in Korea and was copyrighted in Japan. Now, who’s jealous over those cute Korean girls on facebook?

Since I’ve grown my hair to almost waist length, I don’t have the patience to use the curling iron anymore and I’m abstaining my way from any damaging products that will cause a panic to my crowning glory.

But digi perm, I can’t resist. Thanks to Mr. Gijin Shin of Beauty Brick Hair Art Studio.

BeautyBrick is located at Unit 103, 122 Dona Consolacion Bldg., Jupiter Street, Bel-Air, Makati, Philippines. This hip salon is owned by professional Korean Hair Stylist, Mr. Gijin Shin. He’s not well versed in English so he speaks Japanese to communicate with his Filipina assistant. His staff are all Filipinos and hands down to their service. I’d rate them 10/10 for being so accommodating and friendly. They even offered coffee and tea for mister and me.

The process took 3 hours. I guess it depends on how unruly or thick the hair is. Mine seemed to be on best behavior this time and cooperates well. I remember when it was still a virgin, confined from all the chemicals, the solution won’t settle easily unto my hair strands.

From my research most salons in Manila that offer digital perming are owned by Koreans. It is up to you to research well on it’s feedback. Prices range from 1,500 to a hefty 9,000 pesos.

A good hairstylist would offer to evaluate your hair. The strong solution might only damage a coarse hair, so it is best to communicate your concerns before getting into the hot seat.

The package includes a hair cut, keratin treatment and digital perming.

Channeling into Medusa

That’s me, all wired up. It looks scary at first being wired to a machine, but the end result is worth it. They used medium rods to achieve the natural looking waves.

I heard celebrities frequent here. Former Mayor Lito Atienza even came around to attend to someone seated beside me.

I like that my hair don’t smell like the usual solution used in normal perm. I just hope I could keep it up even on my wash and wear attitude.

I remembered being curious on food supplements and healthy living for the first time when I was given a chance to work in a Pharmaceutical Company.

Global warming, pollution, dagat ng basura… lol,  people need to do action and precaution to save our environment and our lives too.

At present, more people are conscious on the toxic effect of their food intake, lifestyle, and natural environment.

Here are a few tips for a healthy balanced diet:

1. An apple a day keeps the doctor away

Seriously, let go of that junk food. It’s making you fat, your skin oily and causes you zits. Why not shift to apples…

Health Benefits: Rich in vitamin C & antioxidant compound. Reduces the risk of colon cancer, heart diseases, prostate cancer and lung cancer.

For diet conscious individuals: it helps in weight loss. The anti-oxidant and fibre enrich apple reduces high cholesterol and prevents heart and lung diseases.

2. Take Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid

Vitamin C is necessary for the growth and repair of tissue, wound healing, and the health of cartilage, bones, and teeth. It is a powerful antioxidant, meaning that it neutralizes potentially harmful free radicals in our bodies.

Many fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin C, especially citrus fruits, peppers, broccoli, strawberries, and cantaloupe.

Recommended: Adult – 90 mg daily

Maximum intake: 2000mg/day for those with deficiency & disease (ask your doctor or see related studies over the internet).

I take 100 mg daily. And whenever I have colds, I increase my intake to 500-1000mg. It’s really effective, considering that during my teenage years I get used to my colds staying for 3 weeks to a month. When I started taking Vitamin C it went down to 3-5 days only.

3. Vitamin E- My beauty vitamin

Tocopherol, known as vitamin E, is a fat-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin E reduces risk of coronary heart disease. Immune function in aged women is improved by ingestion of vitamins C and E. Reduced risk of Alzheimer disease in users of antioxidant vitamin supplements.

Recommended: Adult: 15mg/day

Maximum Intake: 1000mg per day (this is with contraindication, kindly seek your doctors advice)

Aside from taking in Vitamin E, I also get to popped the gel  out and apply on my face and hair as well. The effect was really nice on my skin.

4. Multivitamins & Minerals

Well, let’s face it, we had been once or an on going victims of preservatives & fast food junks. Hence, we needed a supplement to balance our diet, else we’d lose control of our body by the time we’re 40.

Check this Chart of Vitamins and Minerals available in the market, their benefit, and recommended daily allowance are pretty useful to start with.

5. Eat some Veggies

Being a meat lover, and a self confessed Non-Vegetarian, I also recognize the cheaper and safe alternative to medical pills.

The incredible health benefits of fresh vegetables range from being a source of dietary fibre, with low calories and fat, and an extensive energy booster. What else can you ask for?

6. Let Chicken Eggs be part of your diet

Chicken eggs are the most commonly eaten eggs, and are highly nutritious. They supply a large amount of complete, high-quality protein (which contains all essential amino acids for humans), and provide significant amounts of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, choline, iron, calcium, phosporous, and potassium.

They are also one of the least expensive single-food sources of complete protein. One large chicken egg contains approximately 7 grams of protein. Beat that!

7. Get enough sleep and drink plenty of water

Reading is not only for geeks and nerds. It’s a good hobby and should be part of everyone’s lifestyle. Widely recognized as good mental exercise and contributes a lot to the reader’s personality. It makes you more confident, more sensible and attentive.

I love having conversations with people who’s into books. There is always something to explore in a wide variety of topics. It lets me travel through another world and meet extraordinary characters as I lay my hands on each book.

Exercise & Explore– You have only one life. Travel the world. Don’t sulk and let the day end. Take the risk. You’ll definitely have a good time with your grand children narrating every story you remembered during your youthful days. It may be just a walk in the park or a grand tour at the canyons, whichever, traveling is continuous learning. Not only your mind benefit from it but your entire body is working out. You can’t go on a nature climb or bar hopping or horseback riding or diving, when your health doesn’t permit you anymore. You’ll leave a less active life when you grow old. So whatever you want to do now, just do it!

9. Money Matters

Fine you’re young. You have to save for your own family and your future too. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time. Remember, life is short. Who knows about tomorrow? God does. And He doesn’t want us to treat Money as God. Share your blessings. And don’t put so much effort on thinking how money could save your life. Cliché as it may seem, but you’ll leave this world empty handed. So what is money for? There will never be enough for one person. Refer to Number 8.

10. Let go of life’s waste…

Be it a friend who drives you crazy, is jealous of your success, is after your boyfriend, a partner whom you feel is pulling you down, rather than supporting you with your career, a credit-grabber boss, a gossiping office mate, or a job that you’re not happy with. You have three options, ignore it, deal with it, or leave it.

The time had come that I already learned how to let go of certain things. Things which I consider not worthy of my time. I gamble on risk. Think of my options. I consider each day a purpose. Each job a challenge. If this time, it will not work for me, then I take another chance. If I am not productive anymore, I’ll be glad to give it to someone else who will do more than a 100% better than me. I don’t regret and hope for something to come my way. I am happy living one day at a time…

Few months ago, I decided to made a gradual change towards living green. Most of my family and friends knew I don’t like veggies and milk. I still do until this day, I’m so bad. I hope change comes my way soon. But aside from my daily fix of almost black coffee (I took the liberty  of removing the creamer and less sugar to my usual cup), I increased my water intake to help my body fight the toxins I consume. What’s more is I have already developed a love for tea. Was it a major change? I still remember my fb status by the time I started drinking my first cup, it tasted really awful. But I did passed that stage, and now I’m loving green mint tea and its benefits. I’d love to discuss it next time here.

Yesterday marked a milestone too. I have been researching for a while now on the essential uses and benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil and finally got the time to try it.

I have three reasons to add it to my beauty regimen and I’m sure you’re dying to know.

1. Use it as Hair Treatment and Conditioner

In our poor economic condition and country’s recession, our hair must not suffer. Lifeless and dull hair is a result of stress and aging. It isn’t a secret anymore that Indian and Polynesian women has the most beautiful long, thick and shiny black hair. And it is because of the coconut oil that they religiously apply.

Branded shampoos and conditioners usually has strong elements that strips the natural oil off our scalp and hair. But with Virgin Coconut Oil’s natural fatty acids, it nourishes our scalp and strengthens the root to tip of the hair strand.

To apply,  set aside a good amount of oil for your scalp and hair.  Heat it but do not microwave. You can also put it in a bottle and let it soak for awhile in a hot water. Massage your scalp with the oil for 20-30 minutes. Use a shower cap to leave it overnight then rinse with mild shampoo in the morning. Do this regimen weekly or twice a week for better result.

As your body get acquainted with the taste you can increase the mixture up to 3 tablespoon. I tried it last night with my tea, drank 2 cups + one tablespoon of VCO. It is barely noticeable in my cup but the strong oil smell is there. I’ll get the hang of it sooner, and just thinking of the great benefits it could bring on my body, I won’t argue anymore. ♥ Best alternative to milk and vitamins. It improves your immune system and increase your metabolism too.

3. Use it as Moisturizer

Compared to branded beauty products, this one takes the cake. Achieve a glowing, supple and healthy skin by using Virgin Coconut oil as moisturizer. It is known to remove stretchmarks, whitens underarm, a good make-up remover and heals various skin diseases. For best result, leave it on your skin overnight.
